1/100 Alty sighted in Shizuoka!

Posted on 21 May 2007 by Mark

Old news or not, this is definitely welcome news for me. The picture above is the ATX unit Alteisen from the Original Generation Universe of the Super Robot Taisen. The pilot is a regular human named Kyousuke Nanbu. Alteisen is german for old steel or scrap metal. It’s the tanking half of the Kyousuke-Excellen duo. I’m no expert when it comes to SRW mecha but I can definitely say that this model kit is gorgeous. Ever since I got acquainted to SRW mecha, I’ve always loved the design of the Alteisen. It’s very straightforward and yet very powerful. And it’s red! Gotta love red units with no cheese and all skill. Watch the anime or play the game if you want to know more about Kyousuke Nanbu and the origins of the Alteisen. I hope Kotobukiya rolls out more of these 1/100 model kits!

MG Gundam Mk. II get~!

Posted on 16 April 2007 by Mark

Image taken from N.P.GPM

I haven’t written for quite some time. Probably also because Gundam activity hasn’t been up much lately. Last Saturday though, my brother, my fiancee and I went to Greenhills to pick up my brother’s graduation gift: a MG Gundam Mk. II ver. 2.0 AEUG colors. We’ve been looking for this all over the place and all we could find were Titans colors model kits (the dark blue and gold color scheme). So we had to ask the help of Pats from Wasabi Toys to get us one.

He hasn’t painted it yet since he’s still saving up cash for the paint but I’m really glad that he liked what I got him for his graduation.

The image featured above is N.P.GPM’s version of the Gundam Mk. II ver. 2.0 (AEUG colors). Quite neat and it also comes with the G-Defensor system.

I really liked how they incorporated parts of the PG Gundam Mk. II’s design into the MG ver. 2.0. I’m actually considering getting one myself. But then, I’m planning on moving on to Super Robot Taisen model kits by Kotobukiya now that Wasabi Toys has started bringing in SRW model kits. I’ve got my eyes on that SRX model kit.

SRX Variable Box!

Posted on 21 March 2007 by Mark

I don’t know if I mentioned here before that there was an SRX action figure set that was coming out. It’s an action figure set because the box contains all the R-machines minus the R-Gun, the add-on parts to make R-2 and R-3 Powered plus the large sword that SRX uses for its hissatsu.

Well a couple of guys posted pictures of this wonderful acquisition in their blogs. You’ll find the entire gallery of pics from Hima-Toy and kmrnc35′s blog.

Will I ever get tired of collecting?

Posted on 07 March 2007 by Mark

[digg=http://digg.com/offbeat_news/Will_I_ever_get_tired_of_collecting]

This has been a question that’s being thrown at me by myself, my fiancee, my parents and my peers. They look at my office desk and they see four Gundams standing guard and one hovering above with its beam rifle aimed at whoever is seated at my desk.

My actual fascination for model kits, Gundam in particular, started when the first Gundam series hit our local channels. It was Gundam Wing back then. GMA 7 even made up stupid names for the Gundams featured in that series: Gundam The Wing (Wing Gundam), Gundam The Death (Gundam Deathscythe), Gundam The Dragon (Shenlong Gundam), Gundam The Cannon (Gundam Heavyarms) and to our eternal shame – Gundam The Desert for Gundam Sandrock. Good grief! But yeah, everybody got hooked to the Gundam craze when Wing Gundam aired. Then Gundam X came out. Toy Kingdom’s model kits sales soared since they were the mainstream retailer for these toys.

That time, it was still too expensive for me to purchase one for myself. So there were times when we had to make do with locally produced rip-offs of these Gundam model kits. Count on the Filipinos to make pirated copies of everything – even model kits. My cousins in Guam could afford these so for most of the time, my joy was limited to building these model kits, never owning them.

Model kit after model kit came out and my fascination grew even bigger. I went as far as learning about the basic facts about the timelines, the mobile suits and their differences. I got to appreciate other artists other than Kunio Okawara who was the original designer of these Gundams. Other artists included BEE Craft and the guy who designed the Astrays. But the one at the very top is Hajime Katoki, the guy who designed the Gundams in the Gundam Sentinel series and the customs in the Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz series. He even has his own Gundam figure line called Gundam Fix Figuration and the ver. Ka Master Grade model kits.

Still, even at that point, I didn’t have my own model kits. All I had were pictures, a brain full of facts and specs and building experience thanks to cousins who had the money to buy the model kits and preferred to have me build their kits for fear that they’d break something beyond fixing.

That was until I started working.

Ever since I started earning my own money, I’ve purchased two 1:144 HGUCs (High Grade model kits from the Universal Century timeline), two MGs (Gundam ver. OYW and Strike Gundam + IWSP) and one PG (Perfect Grade Strike Gundam). There’s a couple more supposedly coming in, if the budget allows.

Back to the question of whether or not I’ll ever get tired of collecting. It will probably mellow down at some point, especially when there are better, more important things to set aside money for like preparations for marriage, setting aside money for the kids’ education or buying a new house or car. But along the side, I still think that I’ll be collecting model kits, Gundam action figures and other mecha-related stuff. So not only will I be limited to Gundams but my collection may even expand to other mecha series.

I’ve already thrown the question of whether I’ll ever get tired of watching anime/reading manga. Same thing. I’m a perpetual kid and I’ll always be fascinated by mecha and other Japanese fantasy/fiction. I’d probably even end up influencing my own kids in the future in enjoying mecha stuff.

Mecha, model kits and collecting has always been part of me. Some people shake their heads at me for purchasing a Php7,700 model kit (PG Strike cost me that much) but I’d like to believe that it’s every collector to himself/herself. I’d probably shake my head at someone who collects toenails or old iPods that don’t run anymore. Same banana. I’ll definitely collect and cherish my model kits till I die…or when my son or daughter is ready to inherit my collection. Until then, there’s still a lot of model kits to build, paint and modify, action figures to collect, pictures to shoot and blog entries to make regarding the fascinating world of mecha model kits and action figures!

Clear Pearl?!

Posted on 21 February 2007 by Mark

[digg=http://digg.com/offbeat_news/PG_Strike_Clear_Pearl]

I was at Greenhills last weekend with my brothers and my fiancee and we were going around looking at toys, particularly Gundam model kits. We were at Greattoys when my brother noticed that they were selling PG Aile Strike in a blue box. I only recall having seen three PG SEED merchandise: PG Strike, PG Aile Striker Pack + Skygrasper and PG Aile Strike Rouge which comes in a large and hefty red box. So were quite surprised to see another box with the PG Aile Strike name on it. What was even more surprising was the price: Php15,000+. My PG Strike cost me Php7,700 and the PG Aile Striker Pack that I will be purchasing would be nearly 3,000. The PG Aile Strike Rouge is around Php12,000+ at the most. So we were wondering why this one was so bloody expensive.

SRX: I want it!!!

Posted on 15 September 2006 by Mark

Curse my lack of monies to purchase this gorgeous piece of super robot goodness!!!

SRX (Super Robot Type-X) is the popular combiner robot from the popular Banpresto mecha game Super Robot Taisen. It is composed of three units: R-1, R-2, and R-3. R-2 acquires parts to become R-2 Powered and the cannons mounted on its shoulders become the SRX’s arms. R-3 also acquires parts aside from its Strike Shields which it jettisons during variable formation. These additional parts convert it to R-3 Powered and transforms into the SRX’s hips, legs and feet.

Recently, Volks has released the much-awaited SRX Variable Box which contains all three units plus the powered parts and they can all combine to form SRX!

Below are images of the three robots taken from the Volks website. Click on each one to view more images from the Volks site to see the details and articulation of these magnificent toys!

Banpresto's SRX

Posted on 11 September 2006 by Mark

They are finally releasing a combiner toy of the SRX which Super Robot Taisen fans have affectionately labeled as the Banpresto mascot due to the shape of Banpresto’s logo looking exactly the same as the ‘goggles’ that clamp onto the head of the R-1 after the combination of all three machines is finished.

I’m not sure if this is an action figure or a model kit that combines but I highly doubt that they’d roll out a model kit combiner. I believe orders could already sent for the early birds but as to which shops already have this baby, I’m not yet sure. As far as I know, it will cost around 58,000 yen. A friend of mine from Singapore said it will cost him more than a grand in Singaporean Dollars.

I’ll just look on in envy. Shipping stuff into this bloody country can cause you to be buried in debt thanks to shipping taxes. Stupid shipping taxes.
