CFW 3.80 M33 AND M33-2 released!

Posted on 15 January 2008 by Mark

Dark_Alex is the bomb! In a short span of time, they have released the 3.80 M33 custom firmware and an M33-2 update. Below are the contents of the changelog:
3.80 M33
——–
Requeriments:

- Installation requires a PSP with 3.52 M33-3 or higher. In the future installation using
pandora battery will be released.

Instructions:

- Copy the UPDATE folder into /PSP/GAME/
- Get the 3.80 sony update from somewhere (HERE), and put it in same folder, with name “380.PBP”.
- Run it, the update will be done by Sony updater. At the end when you are asked to reboot the
PSP pressing X or O, do it.

Changes:

- HEN core: user mode can load now signchecked files from flash.
- recovery: flash1 format will create flash1 directories after format.
This could fix some flash1 issues with the previous versions.
- Network update from dark-alex.org page. By default is enabled.
You can turn it off in recovery (when off, network update will download sony updates as usual).
- Nids resolver for various kernel libraries.

Comments:

In 3.80 sony has changed (again) kernel nids. The nids resolver will resolve a lot of nids from firmwares 1.50-3.60
(traditional nids) to the ones of 3.80 kernel.
In general, 3.71 nids will NOT be resolved to 3.80 ones. However, to compatibilize 3.80 M33 with prx’s programmed for 3.71,
a few very 3.71 nids that were found in some 3.71 plugins will be resolved too.
More info about what is resolved in nidsresolver_status.txt.

Thanks to the combination of the nids resolver and the user libraries possibility in kernel mode added back in 3.71 M33-3,
some programs that stopped working in 3.30 M33 may work again now. One of them is PimpStreamer 0.90.

Finally, popsloader plugin from 3.71 will not work in 3.80 M33 due to its system dependancy. A new one will be rewritten for 3.80 M33.

File Description
3.80 M33-2
Requeriments:
3.80 M33

Instructions: Copy UPDATE folder to /PSP/GAME folder

This update fixes a couple of issues.

- Function scePowerGetClockFrequency/scePowerGetClockFrequencyInt was not resolved properly due to a
confussion between the two nids applying to the same function. Fixed, this update is necessary
for plugins and kernel homebrew reporting psp cpu speed.

- PSX EBOOT.PBP that have a icon of 80×80 pixels will not be replaced by Dracula icon in savedata.

Explanation of icon issue:
In 3.80 pops, Sony has introduced a bug that causes a crash when the icon of the pbp is not 80×80,
like those of psstore. To resolve the issue, M33 was replacing the icon in ram by the one with Dracuala image,
what caused the side effect of ps1 save games having Dracula icon.

Now the behaviour in 3.80 M33-2 is to replace the icon in ram only if the one in the file is not 80×80.

I haven’t updated to 3.80 M33 or M33-2 yet for two reasons:

  1. I’m still happy with my current theme and I hear a lot of people saying 3.71 CXMB’s aren’t compatible with the new firmware
  2. I’m not using anything that urgently needs the new firmware plus I’d rather wait till the plugins have been converted to 3.80 before I convert

So it’s more of waiting for all this to stabilize before I start converting. Nevertheless, I’m very thankful to Dark_Alex for coming back to the community and making this wonderful custom firmware again! Cheers!

This is the first time I’m deliberately pimping someone’s PRX theme here but this one just rocks so hard I couldn’t help it. This theme was posted in Consolespot.net. If you want to get hold of it, I suggest you register at Consolespot.net so that you can have access to the downloads. And also, if you do like this theme, please Donate something to Skyfox. I know the chap would really appreciate it. I’ll be putting this into my PSP as soon as I get home. Oh by the way, before you guys get too excited, this theme is made or designed for CFW 3.71 M33-4. I’m not sure if Skyfox will be releasing a version that complies with the upcoming 3.80 M33 release by Dark_Alex but I sure hope he does. For slim users, this one doesn’t have the Connected Display Settings icon so if you can’t live with that missing in your XMB, you might want to avoid this theme until Skyfox gets to release a version that has it.

New Year, New Banner

Posted on 07 January 2008 by Mark

You’re probably wondering: where’s the staple Gundam in the banner? Is Frost going to stop talking about Gundams and other toys and stuff?

Well, not really. It’s just that lately, having purchased a PSP Slim & Light, the handheld has been taking up much of my time…at least until the MG Unicorn Gundams arrive for me to build.

Lately, I’ve been looking up a lot of stuff regarding PSPs and custom firmware. Practically every PSP you might try to purchase here in the Philippines comes in CFW and it’s usually M33-2 or 3. Most of them are Slim & Light and there appears to be no shortage of any color in the Slim & Light line: lavender, baby blue, baby pink, silver, ceramic white and the classic piano black (which I have). I’ve been looking at customizing my XMB and will be trying out some stuff that I recently downloaded to see if I can give my XMB a different look from most.

For those who want to convert their PSP’s OFW (Official Firmware) into CFW (Custom Firmware), there’s one blogger that’s been a big help to me and I regularly check his site for updates on stuff. The place is called StyleMo.com and it’s run by a fellow Filipino named Dino Latoga. He claims that his blog was quite boring until he started writing about PSPs and custom firmware. Well, I must say, it’s quite an informative blog when it comes to converting to CFW.

His most recent post is regarding the announcement that Dark_Alex, the good chap who started the M33 craze, is back on the coding scene and is currently working on CFW 3.80 M33 which sports new visualizations as well as the features that are included in the latest OFW (i.e. internet radio). I can’t wait to see how the new CFW looks like.

In other PSP-related news, this March, Sony is releasing a 16Gb duo card. So if you think 4 or 8 gigs of memory isn’t enough to house all the games that you want to play at a time, then 16Gb is the card for you. It’s $300 a pop though.
